Why Group Lessons?

How Group Classes Work

What is Group Piano?

While Group Piano studios have in recent years become more common, group study has been around for decades.  Common in music colleges and universities, Group Piano provides benefits that private lessons don't.

What is Group Piano?

Just what it sounds like!  We learn to play as a group, and playing in a group is A LOT of fun!  Not only do we study traditional classical concepts, we explore jazz, blues, pop music, improvisation, and ear training in a fun, supportive environment.

Why Take Group Piano Lessons?

Group Piano is a fun alternative to traditional lessons

Playing piano in a group is not only a lot of fun but studies show we tend to practice more, play with better rhythm, and develop fewer jitters performing.

Group Piano makes music more social

Playing and learning in a group builds friendships and camaraderie around our musical experience, in a positive and motivational environment.

Group Piano is used in universities and music colleges

Music degree programs have been using group piano methods for decades.  Studies show the group environment provides a forum for questions and discussion and fosters active, independent learning .

Group Lessons vs. Private Lessons

While private lessons are a common way to study piano, there are many misconceptions about group piano being somehow less effective than private lessons, which is just not the case.  While advanced players benefit from private instruction as they study the inner workings of specific composers and styles, beginning and intermediate piano students often progress faster in group settings than in private lessons.  Some benefits of group lessons include:

  • Groups have a powerful, built in motivation because of peer interaction
  • Group classes provide an efficient and upbeat way to teach fundamental skills like rhythm, ear training, and technique
  • Group lessons offer students frequent and stress-free opportunities to perform and play for others

What is Group Piano?

Group Piano is just what it sounds like...

...taking piano lessons as a group!  We learn to read, play, and perform for one another as a group, and we do this in a low-key, supportive environment where questions and discussion are encouraged.

What will I learn?

Everything you'd learn in a private lesson and more.  Students in group classes learn music fundamentals (reading notes, rhythms, articulations, technique, theory), as well as the understanding and ability to play in a group.  We study ear-training, improvisation, chordal playing, and even composition.  We learn to play solo pieces, duets, and full class arrangements for piano groups.  Basics genres covered in all classes include classical, jazz, blues, and pop music.  Other styles are covered too when requested by students.

How many students will be in my class?

Class sizes vary depending upon the group and session.  Most class sizes are 4-6 students per class, each student having her/his own piano (provided).

Where and where are classes held?

Classes meet once per week at the Folk School of KDHX, and last for 45 minutes.
